Are you suffering from unexpected jaw pain? Do you grind or clench your teeth at night? Is your pain like a bad earache? If you’re answering “yes,” you might be suffering from a TMJ Disorder.
What are TMJ Disorders?
TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) Disorders are painful conditions related to the jaw joint and muscles. There are typically three main categories of TMJ Disorder:
● Discomfort and pain in the jaw joints
● Physical damage to the joint
● Arthritis within the joint
What causes TMJ Disorder?
TMJD can be caused by trauma to the jaw or the temporomandibular joint. TMJD appears to be more common in women than in men, and scientists are exploring a possible link between the disorder and hormones. It can also be caused (or made worse) by stress. If you clench or grind teeth at night, a custom-fit mouth guard can prevent the development of TMJD.
What are the symptoms?
● A burning, radiating pain around the joint (just behind and below your ear)
● Stiff jaw
● Difficulty opening mouth widely
More serious symptoms include loud sounds when opening or closing your mouth or changes in upper and lower jaw alignment.
How is it diagnosed?
There is no exact test for TMJD, but a professional dentist will examine your jaw, consult with you about pain and symptoms, and may recommend imaging to determine the degree of damage.
